Koch's Deli

Our Story

From a Family Takeout Shop to a Philly Staple Since 1966.

Koch’s Deli began on June 25, 1966, when Sidney and Frances Koch opened a small takeout shop near campus. It was their 28th wedding anniversary. They always wanted to serve students and families in the area. Locals remember Frances bringing soup to anyone who was sick. From day one, this corner shop became a place people trusted for a good sandwich and a warm welcome.

Over time, the Koch family turned a simple sandwich shop into a neighborhood favorite. Bobby and Lou, the founders’ sons, took over in the 80s and renamed it Koch’s Deli. Customers were greeted by name, often handed a slice of meat while waiting in line. It was more than a deli—it was part of everyday life in University City. The focus stayed the same: serve good food, treat people right, and keep things simple.

Today, Koch’s Deli continues to serve the same casual classics: stacked sandwiches, fresh bagels, and a come-as-you-are vibe. Located at 4309 Locust St, the shop offers dine-in, delivery, takeout, and catering every day from 11 AM to 8 PM. It remains a trusted stop for students, locals, and anyone who wants a no-fuss meal done right. After all these years, it’s still about good food and community—just like it started.
